Topper Care & Maintenance: Keeping Your Magnets Happy

One of the questions we occasionally get is, "Why did a magnet come off my topper?"

The short answer is that magnets, adhesives, metal, and plastic all live in the real world, and the real world can be tough on them.

The good news is that with a little care, your toppers can provide years of service.

Heat Is the Biggest Enemy

If there's one thing we'd like every topper owner to know, it's this:

Don't leave your toppers in a hot car whenever possible.

Extreme heat can affect magnets in several ways. First, heat can slightly reduce a magnet's holding power. While most magnets recover once they cool down, repeated exposure to very high temperatures isn't ideal.

More importantly, the metal topper, the magnet, and the adhesive all expand and contract at different rates when temperatures change. Over time, this constant movement can weaken the bond between the magnet and the topper.

Think of it like bending a paperclip back and forth. One movement doesn't hurt anything, but enough cycles eventually create wear.

A hot summer car can easily reach temperatures well over 140°F, making it one of the harshest environments your toppers will ever experience.

Flexing Happens

Our toppers are made from lightweight aluminum so they're comfortable to wear all day. Like any thin metal, aluminum can flex slightly during normal use.

Repeated bending, twisting, or flexing places stress on the adhesive that holds the magnets in place. Most toppers will never experience enough stress to cause an issue, but accidents happen.

Dropping toppers, sitting on them, storing them loosely in a purse, or stuffing them into a crowded drawer can all contribute to wear over time.

Magnets Do Age

Magnets are remarkably durable, but they're not indestructible.

Over many years, magnets can gradually lose a small amount of strength. Exposure to high heat, impacts, and harsh environments can accelerate that process.

Fortunately, the magnets we use are designed to provide years of reliable service under normal conditions.

Tips for Longer Topper Life

Here are a few simple things you can do to keep your toppers looking and performing their best:

Store Them Flat

When you're not wearing your toppers, store them in a protective case, organizer, or drawer where they can lay flat.

Avoid Extreme Heat

Try not to leave toppers in vehicles, direct sunlight, near heaters, or other high-temperature environments for extended periods.

Remove Them Gently

Instead of pulling from one corner, remove toppers evenly whenever possible. This reduces stress on both the topper and the magnets.

Keep Them Clean

A soft cloth is usually all that's needed. If necessary, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

Check Magnets Occasionally

Every now and then, take a quick look at the magnets. If one appears loose, it's much easier to repair before it falls off than after it disappears into the carpet.
